New Jersey’s Bell Works Draws “Severance” TV Show Fans to Former Tech Hub
Fans hooked on Apple TV+’s “Severance” are flocking to Holmdel, New Jersey’s, Bell Works building, where crews film the show’s Lumon Industries scenes. This massive building covers two million square feet, located just 45 minutes from Jersey City and an hour outside Manhattan.
The former Bell Laboratories created groundbreaking advances in mobile technology and fiber optics for four decades. Since 2013, it’s transformed into something new; a mix of retail, office space, and entertainment spots that’s constantly bustling. During the renovation, architect Alexander Gorlin balanced innovation with preservation. He preserved Eero Saarinen’s original elements while injecting new life into the former research facility.
Film crews love shooting here. While “Severance” might be the main attraction, both “American Horror Story” and “Emergence” have filmed here too. These days, visitors can tackle escape rooms, play basketball, jump into pickleball games, practice their golf swing indoors, or explore virtual reality.
The building’s popularity keeps exploding on social media, with TikTok users documenting their visits inside. Music lovers have caught onto the show’s atmosphere too. Electronic group Odesza released an eight-hour mix they called “music to refine to.”
When Barack Obama couldn’t find time to narrate the building’s history, Keanu Reeves jumped in. His voice now takes viewers through the Lumon building’s promo video, adding celebrity flair to its story.
“It was a very short list of people. There was one person that I asked before (Keanu Reeves), and he said no: President Barack Obama,” “Severence” director Ben Stiller said to nme.com.
Now it’s become a hot spot for locals and tourists alike, hosting community events that keep the space alive. Stores inside are seeing a boost as show fans wander through their doors.
“Severance” creator Dan Erickson chose this location for its unique architecture. While there aren’t official building tours, anyone can explore the public areas and take in the surroundings.
