About Dwight Gooden.
There have been few brighter stars that have burst onto the New York sports scene than Dwight Gooden. Brought up by the New York Mets in 1984, as 19 year old phenom, he outperformed his peers…and just about everyone else. That season he set rookie records, with 17 wins against only 9 losses, 218 innings pitched, and an unfathomable 276 strikeouts to go with a 2.60 Earned Run Average. This propelled Gooden to National League Rookie Of The Year honors.
The next season, in 1985, the Doctor, as he was now known, hit even bigger heights. His Major League best 24-4 record, astonishing 1.53 ERA, 16 complete games, and 268 strikeouts, easily garnered the 20 year old the National League Cy Young award for best pitcher.

Gooden’s struggles.
From there though, it all seemed to go downhill for Doc. Despite the Mets epic run in 1986, wining the World Series in the most dramatic fashion, Gooden had troubles. Drug and Alcohol troubles. Years and years of them. However, He found redemption of sorts in the 90’s with the Yankees, pitching a no hitter, and helping the Yanks to 2 World Series. However, Doc’s troubles with substance abuse and the law continued. Thankfully after years of treatment, and relapses, Doc Gooden seems to have finally straightened his life out over the past few years.
Furthermore, this upcoming season will be the biggest one for Gooden since his playing days ended over 20 years ago. Meanwhile, Both Dwight Gooden and his beloved Mets teammate during those crazy years, Darryl Strawberry, will both be honored, in separate ceremonies this Spring at Citi Field. They will each have their numbers retired. This is the greatest achievement a player can have bestowed upon them by their former team.
So, come on out and congratulate old Doc on this honor, at the Hobby Shop on February 24th! Moreover, sure to stop in and get your tickets before they sell out, along with the presale autograph special ticket. You’ll be able to get 2 items signed for just 50 dollars!
