Discovering Delight at The Mathis House in Toms River

Tucked away in Toms River, The Mathis House is a delightful blend of history and hospitality that made our recent visit an absolute treat. We chose this charming spot to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday, and from the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for something special. A Little About The Mathis House Originally built in 1898 as the private residence of Thomas Mathis, a prominent local businessman and community leader, The Mathis House has quite the story to tell. It started as a private residence, then transformed into a hospital during World War I, and now stands proudly as a cozy bed-and-breakfast with all the comforts you could wish for. My Day At The Mathis House Our afternoon began with a warm welcome from Jeanne, our server extraordinaire. Not only did she serve up delicious food with a smile, but she also sprinkled in fascinating tidbits about the house's history, adding a whimsical touch to our dining experience. It is evident that Jeanne is thoroughly enjoying her post-retirement gig! Exploring The Mathis House felt like stepping into a time capsule, with each room elegantly decorated to blend Victorian charm with modern flair. It was like staying in a beautifully restored piece of history, complete with all the comforts of home. We were in awe of the architecture, beautiful furniture and décor.          As we wandered through the halls, we stumbled upon the Christmas in July shop, a festive addition that brought a touch of holiday cheer to our summer day. It was impossible to resist browsing through the decorations and unique gifts, each adding to the magic of our visit. Of course, the highlight of the high tea was the food. The Mathis House boasts a menu that celebrates local flavors and seasonal ingredients, and let me tell you, every bite was a flavor explosion. From the delicious homemade mushroom soup (I brought 2 containers home!) to the adorable and tasty tea sandwiches (the cucumber with scallion cream cheese was a highlight) to the amazing triple chocolate scone (brought one home as well!). There aren’t enough descriptive words to describe the homemade clotted cream!! Every guest received an entire pot of hot, delicious tea adorned with the cutest tea cozy.   The decadent desserts included chocolate, peanut butter mouse with blueberries, eclairs, mini cupcakes, and more! We couldn't stop raving about the culinary delights. Our time at The Mathis House was more than just a meal; it was an experience filled with laughter, good company, and memories we'll cherish. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a charming getaway, The Mathis House in Toms River promises a slice of history served with a side of smiles. With friendly faces like Jeanne's and food that's as delicious as it is delightful, it's a place we can't wait to visit again. MORE STORIES FROM BARBARA
