Summer At The Shore Means Family, Fun, and Food!
Every summer, my family carries out the traditions that were put in place by my parents when we were kids.
Summer At The Shore Starts…
The season officially begins with a night at Jenkinson’s in Point Pleasant Beach where we have our first boardwalk cheesesteak with fries on the side. Once we satisfy that craving it’s off to the arcades to play games.
Not trying to toot my own horn, but I am the reigning champion of BALLOON BLAST, which is shooting water into a clown’s mouth and breaking the balloon. It’s a serious time of focus and they all know just how competitive I can be. Get out of my way, that big red comb will be mine!
The winning begins in Ocean County! We wrap the night up with an orange & vanilla Kohr’s cone with rainbow sprinkles!
Around the fourth of July we hold our annual Family Boardwalk food challenge. We start at the first food vendor and don’t stop until we get to the last. The rules are simple. You have to get to eat something from each place and the person that makes it to the last restaurant gets the MERCH, a Point Pleasant hoodie!
BTW, this family tradition works just as well on the Seaside Boardwalk. We hit them both every summer! I’ve never won but I try new strategies every year. I will get that prize!
A Summer Veteran
Once in total summer mode, you can find me most late afternoons on the beach. DON’T TELL ANYONE, but that time of day is the best-kept secret for propping your chair up in front of the ocean. The crowds are gone, and the temperatures are perfect. It doesn’t matter what kind of challenging day you’ve had, a little time at the ocean will change that in a snap.
All summer long my family and I have huge BBQs. There are probably 30 of us and it’s always an open house in our backyards. Everyone brings their favorite dish and we have quite a spread. The burgers and dogs are plenty and the grill never gets turned off until the last person leaves. At dusk, we toast marshmallows around the fire pit and make more smores than anyone could eat. We do this rain or shine, and if the weather is inclement, the picnic is moved into the garage. Raining buckets won’t stop us.
My mom and dad started the tradition when we were literally babies. I can still visualize my 10-year-old self running around the backyard with a huge gaggle of siblings and cousins. We were a crazy bunch and didn’t stop wreaking havoc until someone got the first stitches. My brother would always win that one! I cherish what my parents started and am so grateful that we can easily pass this tradition down to our kids.
These days most of the BBQs are held at my house as I live about a mile from the beach. What’s cooler than fireworks on the beach at dusk? We are there!
The shore is my happy place, and this Jersey Girl cannot imagine living anywhere else.
