Two DC Comics Movies That Actually Look… Good?
Admittedly I am a Marvel guy. Apart from the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton and the first Wonder Woman film, I have been wholly unimpressed or completely disinterested in every DC Comics film to date. Aquaman was trash, I hated the Christian Bale Batman series, Wonder Woman 2 was atrocious, and the Superman movies were just tepid. So imagine my surprise when within a couple of weeks we get trailers for two upcoming DC films which actually look… good?
There’s been a ton of press about the issues surrounding Ezra Miller, who brings his character of The Flash from the TV series to the big screen for this first time. With all the personal drama out there it seemed this project could go the way of the recently scrapped Batgirl movie, but the inside word was the movie was so good it wouldn’t make sense to scrap it. The new trailer definitely backs that up.
The Flash looks like it might actually be hitting all the beats that have made Marvel films the superhero standard: humor, action, time travel, peril, call backs and cameos – it’s all in there. What grabbed me right away was the original Batman – Michael Keaton – front and center. And when he says “You wanna get nuts? Let’s get nuts” that was the moment that I was all in.
Behold Keaton Batman, Affleck Batman, Michael Shannon Zod, Supergirl, and more in the trailer for The Flash which opens June 16.
The other DC Comics movie on the horizon that has an intriguing trailer is Blue Beetle. I know nothing at all about this character or comic, so I had zero pre-conceived notions before seeing the trailer (apart from that DC films usually suck). I was delightfully surprised by this one! The storyline is interesting, I love that it’s a diverse cast and that Latinos front and center in a superhero film – a rarity to say the least.
Check out the Blue Beetle trailer, it hits theaters August 18.
