Great New Songs From 7 Classic Alternative Artists Including Depeche Mode
Each week on New Wave Rewind we do a little segment called Now & Then, where we highlight new music from a classic alternative artist followed by one of their old faves. In some nine years of doing this show we are never at a loss for some great music from these heritage acts. Below are some of the recent new releases that have been featured on New Wave Rewind. I hope you dig them!
Depeche Mode – Ghosts Again
This is the first single from the forthcoming Depeche Mode album Momento Mori, and their first without Andy Fletcher who passed away last year. “Ghosts Again” is predictably melancholy, and the vibe reminds me some of Violator-era DM.
The Alarm – Next
In all the years of doing the Now & Then segment, I don’t think we’ve featured an artist as much as The Alarm. Mike Peters does not slow down, even when he is in the hospital being treated for pneumonia and a relapse of his leukemia, which is where he wrote many of the songs that will appear on the forthcoming album Forwards. The video for the first single, “Next”, was shot in the hospital where Mike was being treated.
Everything But The Girl – Nothing Left to Lose
Husband and wife duo Everything But The Girl are set to release their first new album in 24 years. The video for “Nothing Left to Lose”, the first single from the forthcoming Fuse, was shot in a single take.
Public Image Ltd – Hawaii
This song is unlike anything you have ever heard from John Lydon. “Hawaii” was written by Lydon as a love letter for his wife Nora who has been suffering from Alzheimer’s for many years now. This song is achingly beautiful, and it was a candidate to represent Ireland in the next Eurovision contest.

Peter Gabriel – Panopticom
Peter Gabriel is getting ready to release a new album called I/O, and he will be touring behind it as well (no U.S. dates as yet). The first single is called “Panopitcom”.
Squeeze – Food For Thought
For all their lighthearted sound, Squeeze can get sneaky political. It’s the band’s first new song in some five years, and it’s a charitable endeavor as all proceeds will go to various independent U.K. food banks.
Don Letts – Outta Sync
Don Letts is a legend. He’s been a DJ, musician, director, Clash collaborator, Big Audio Dynamite co-founder and so much more, and now at the age of 66 he is releasing his first solo album. He’s under no pop star pretentions, and this video perfectly sums up the vibe of a trailblazer doing his own thing.
