What Did TJ Bryan Watch On YouTube Yesterday? Linda Ronstadt On CBS Sunday Morning
One of my first crushes was on Linda Ronstadt. No one was prettier, and certainly no one could sing like her. Listening to songs like “Blue Bayou,” “It’s So Easy,” “You’re No Good,” and “Tumbling Dice” was to be enveloped in silky magnificence. Ronstadt was a staple on FM radio for years, but she wasn’t content to stay in one lane.
She recorded an album of standards for the 1983 collection What’s New. She swung into jazz with Lush Life the following year, and reached into her Mexican roots with Canciones de mi Padre in 1987, a collection of traditional Mexican songs that she grew up hearing in her Tucson, Arizona home.
Ronstadt continued to record and perform live into the new century, but announced her retirement in 2011 due to being robbed of her ability to sing due to a rare neurological condition. While her singing voice is gone, this incredible artist still has more to offer in the form of her new book, “Feels Like Home: A Song for the Sonoran Borderlands.”
The book, written with former New York Times writer Lawrence Downs, is a love letter to the food and community that shaped her childhood. Twenty family recipes are accompanied by beautiful photographs and often poignant essays by Ronstadt.
CBS Sunday Morning this past weekend aired a lovely piece on Linda Ronstadt where she discusses the book, the loss of her singing voice, and other topics as well.
Here are a few Linda Ronstadt performances to enjoy:
