’45 Years of Amityville: Cult Classic, Local Connections’
Most of us know that The Amityville Horror, which redefined the thriller genre, turns age 45 this year. What many don’t know is that the Ocean County Library has a featured role. Join us for a screening of this unforgettable film and a display of Amityville artifacts in the Bishop Memorial Wing of the Toms River Branch, 1pm-4pm on Saturday, October 26.
Key portions of the movie were filmed in the Bishop Memorial Wing of the Toms River Branch. Rare, irreplaceable relics of the original film shoot are carefully kept in the Branch’s Hugh B. Wheeler Room, the Library’s archive space.
Filming began in Toms River in 1978. James Brolin, Margot Kidder and Rod Steiger starred in the story of a young family whose lives unravel after they buy a home overtaken by paranormal forces.
The newest episode of OCL’s Wheeler Talks podcast series on Spotify highlights an intriguing button worn by the crew, bearing the legend “Brotherhood of the Itchy Whiskers.”
