Amazon Testing Delivery Robots Which Will Totally Be Vandalized, Right?
Amazon is always thinking about new and innovative ways to deliver to customers, and the Amazon Scout delivery robot is yet another innovation to add to their portfolio that simultaneously wins the award for “Most Likely To Get Vandalized.”
Amazon first announced Scout in January and began testing a small fleet near their headquarters in Washington. The Scout was accompanied by an Amazon employee during testing, and apparently, things went so well in the Washington tests that the retail giant is now testing more Scout robots in Southern California starting today (August 6.)
The SoCal tests will also have an employee accompany Scout, but eventually, these robots will have to go at it alone without a human companion, which is really when the actual testing begins.
Let’s be real: Someone is bound to attack or attempt to steal a Scout. Not if, but when it happens, it has the potential of hilarity, ending poorly, and if we’re lucky, maybe both.
Until that time comes, you can see Amazon Scout in action in the clip below, which finds the robot delivering a package in a neighborhood so picturesque it’s borderline absurd. Also, the fact that the video doesn’t show someone trying to ride Amazon Scout like a mini-tractor seems like a lost opportunity.
