The Warmth Of Ramen – 5 Places On The Jersey Shore To Grab a Bowl.

You know me, I love soup. I’ve written about it many times. I’ve shared my recipes with you. You’ve shared your recipes with me. I love that we can be foodie friends.

Anytime of the year is my favorite time to whip up batches of soups, chowders, bisques, and anything that makes you all warm inside.

Let’s talk about Ramen

Is it really considered soup? It’s got broth that is filled with flavor and is accompanied by a bunch of tasty ingredients and lots and lots of noodles. The noodles are ramen, not the broth.

The combination of ingredients in a bowl of ramen is up to the person who chooses to enjoy this warm delightful meal.
The possibilities of what goes into a bowl of ramen are endless. You can select from a variety of proteins, vegetables, herbs, spices, and toppings. Its evolution is ongoing.

Monmouth & Ocean Places For A Great Breakfast

According to a blog on san-j.com, Ramen is a type of Japanese noodle soup. Once a simple street food, it’s now become a gourmet phenomenon around the world. Every bowl of ramen has three main components:

Broth: A good bowl of ramen begins with a hearty, flavorful broth. Most broths begin with a combination of Japanese soup stock, or “dashi,” and chicken or pork stock. Each ramen chef uses a different “tare,” or flavoring base, that they add to each bowl of broth before serving.

Noodles: Ramen noodles contain wheat flour, salt, water and a special alkaline water called “kansui.” “Kansui” is what gives the noodles their unique flavor and springy texture. Noodle shape and thickness often change depending on the type of ramen you’re eating.

Toppings: Ramen chefs artfully arrange each bowl with toppings like fried veggies, sliced meat and sheets of seaweed before serving.

Now on to where you can find this bowl of nourishing goodness. Here are 5 places on the Jersey Shore that you can check out for a nice bowl of ramen, your way.

  • Usagi Sushi and Ramen - 2005 NJ-35 #12, Oakhurst, NJ 07755

Located in the Towne Center, Usagi is a favorite of the locals. The Tonkatsu ramen seems to be quite popular. It’s a pork based broth with chashu pork, kikurage, menma, fish cake, egg and scallions. The Tonkatsu ramen and one of Usagi’s roast duck pork buns with hoisin sauce sounds good about now.

  • Yumi - 1120 E Ocean Ave, Sea Bright, NJ 07760 & 9 Broad St, Red Bank, NJ 07701

The pork belly ramen is where it’s at! So flavorful and nicely presented. If you’re a lover of heat, order the spicy beef ramen. This place also has fantastic sushi, and the tuna pizza is off the charts.

  • Ramen Nagomi - 5 W Main St, Freehold, NJ 07728

A nice hot bowl of their chicken ramen is perfect on a cold day. Add a couple of the steamed pork buns made with pork belly and sriracha mayo, and you can go to sleep with a smile on your face. According to Laura L. they have a vegetarian curry & king trumpet mushroom ramen that’ll knock you out. Lots of vegan options to choose from.

  • Vibe N Slurp - 1776 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ 08753

The jerk chicken ramen is just what I needed on my way home from a long day. That’s me, passing by a thousand times as I ride down Hooper Ave. Finally stopped to see what the fuss was all about. Next time the oxtail ramen pops up on the specials menu, I’m diving in.

  • Kyuramen - 1419 Long Beach Blvd, Surf City, NJ 08008 - locations all over the U.S.

Haven’t been here yet, but the word in my neck of the woods is very positive.

Something gets lost when you order ramen on Grub Hub or Uber Eats. I have done takeout ramen and it’s just not the same as eating it immediately after it’s made. If you find a place that has seating, please opt to enjoy your ramen at the restaurant. This place has cozy private booths to slurp up your ramen without judgement.

A beautiful assortment of appetizers, that includes steamed pork bao (my favorite), popcorn salt & pepper chicken, and Japanese fried oysters. I received a strong recommendation to try the Mega Ramen, and the Kimchi Ramen. I’m planning a visit very soon.
