I have a few bagel places in Ocean County that I absolutely love. I used to live in Ocean Township, and around the corner from me was a place called, What About a Bagel on West Park Ave. in Cobblestone Village. They were one of my favorites.
Now that I live in Ocean County, I have to say that new place in Brick, “Big Belly Bagels” is my current favorite.
My loving companion, Bruce, comes from a long line of bagel bakers from Brooklyn. His late father was one of the last great bagel bakers of his generation. If you’ve ever visited Grandma’s Bagels in Little Silver back in the 90's and early 2000's, you may have known him, his name is Max Cooperman.
Max and his wife, Phyllis were the King and Queen of their little bagel castle. Phyllis's grandfather was actually one of the first bagel bakers in America and had a hand in forming the first ever bagel baker's union.
Phyllis was practically the Mayor of Little Silver. Everyone knew her and absolutely loved her. Like all Jewish Grandmas, Phyllis was a nurturer with a great laugh, and was as loving as any human being can be.
She greeted every single person who walked through the door, and would often sit down with customers to chat while they ate their meals. She treated the entire community like family.
I have heard so many stories about Phyllis from her children, grandchildren, and other family members, it makes me sad that we never got to meet.

Before I list some of Ocean County’s favorite bagel shops, I want you to give you my thoughts on what an honest to goodness bagel should be. A REAL bagel is rolled by hand, kettle boiled, and baked. The result is a dense, chewy, doughy interior with a shiny, golden crisp exterior.
Let’s take a trip through Ocean County for some really great bagels.
Baron's Bagels - 3003 NJ-88, Point Pleasant, NJ 08742 & 1743 NJ-88, Brick Township, NJ 08724
Some of the best bagels in Ocean County according to WRAT listeners. Baron's won the WRAT Shore Awards 2 years in a row.
Silver Bay Bagels - 1831 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ 08753
It's not just the people in the Silverton section of Toms River who praise the bagels at Silver Bay, it's people from all over Toms River.
Big Belly Bagel - 325 Drum Point Rd, Brick Township, NJ 08723
Now these are real bagels! Hand rolled, kettle boiled, and baked. The chew on these bagels took me back to grandma's Sunday morning breakfast table in Brooklyn. **UPDATE** 1/15/24 : Nominated for a 2024 WRAT Shore Award.
JT's Bagel Hut - 918 Lacey Rd Unit 4, Forked River, NJ 08731
A lot of people in Forked River have told me this should be on my list of must visit places. I know my friend, Jimmy R. travels here on occasion to feed his Toms River crew breakfast on Friday mornings.
Terrigani's Bagels - 2526 Hooper Ave, Brick Township, NJ 08723
I had never heard of this place until recently. People on one of the local pages I visit swear by Terrigani's Bagels. I'll have to check it out.
Broadway Giant Bagels - 2119 Whitesville Rd # 4, Toms River, NJ 08755
This is one of the few bagel places that stays open past 3 pm. They're open Monday through Friday until 4pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 5;30am until 2pm. They are know to be a little heavy on the bagel toppings. I'm good with that.

Round Dough With A Hole - 400 Richmond Ave, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742
Quality ingredients and great service is what Round Dough With a Hole is known for. All my Point Pleasant peeps love this place.
Bagelville - 950 Atlantic City Blvd Ste #11, Bayville, NJ 08721
Another place mentioned by the locals on the message boards and social pages. The bagels look delicious.
Oh What A Bagel - 657 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ 08721
Nick said, "Only bagel shop I've gone to for 15 years. Best around." Others have mentioned that the bagels are huge, warm, and delicious.
Bella's Bagels - 1405 NW Central Ave, Seaside Park, NJ 08752
Not only do they have great bagels, the locals rave about the breakfast sandwiches. I'm all in for an onion bagel with cream cheese & lox.
Joe's Bagel and Grill - 501 US-9 Unit 300, Waretown, NJ 08758
This location has racked up a ton of fans. I've been to a few, including Belmar, and the one on Fischer Blvd, but this one seems to be the shining star.
Danny’s Bayshore Bagels - 550 N Main St C, Barnegat, NJ 08005
Another bagel place I just heard about. I'm in Barnegat a couple of times a month, next time I'm there, I'll check out Danny's. The service here is said to be fantastic.
New York Water Bagel Company - 542 Fischer Blvd, Toms River, NJ 08753
Open 365 days a year! I've been here several times and the bagels are really like New York bagels from Brooklyn. They freeze well too.
Rosemary Artisanal Bagelry - 1135 E Veterans Hwy Building 1 Unit 9, Jackson Township, NJ 08527
I am intrigued by the unique shop. Not your average bagel joint. According to the website: "We boil and stone-fire cook our own bagels and ferment our own sourdough. We even make our own mayo and dressings because we know the difference between homemade and factory made. The beautiful space and excellent service are just the everything bagel spice sprinkled on top."
