Six Flags Great Adventure: El Toro Reopens After 10-Month Closure

Attention Six Flags Great Adventure thrill-seekers: The iconic El Toro will be available to ride starting this weekend after a 10-month closure due to it previously malfunctioning. While Memorial Day is the unofficial start to the summer, fans of the classic ride will have time to embark on the rollercoaster starting Saturday (June 17).

The ride will reopen to season pass holders Saturday at 9:30 a.m., a Six Flags spokeswoman told NJ.com. Regular ticket holders will be able to ride starting at 1:30 p.m. Similar season pass holder hours will be held on Sunday.

This is the first time since August that Six Flags goers would be able to ride the wooden rollercoaster that injured 14 people. All of the injured riders were immediately taken to the hospital and were released the following day.

The ride was closed immediately following the malfunction. Upon inspection in September 2022, the ride was deemed “structurally compromised.” There was damage to track support columns, and the ride was ordered closed indefinitely.

“The ride remains closed as DCA’s investigation into the ride incident continues,” Tammori C. Petty-Dixon, spokeswoman for the DCA, said at the time.

This follows when the entire amusement park was shut down due to dangerous weather conditions back in April.

“Due to the Township of Jackson Emergency Declaration, as well as for the safety of our guests and team members, Six Flags Great Adventure is closed today, April 2,” said the park in a statement. “We anticipate re-opening Wednesday, April 5 for Spring Break.”

The theme park opened for the season on April 1. However, attendees had to stop their fun when thunderstorms began in the Garden State in the early evening hours. One thunderstorm produced a confirmed tornado in Jackson, according to the Mount Holly office of the National Weather Service.

Six Flags Great Adventure is located in Jackson. It is 510 acres making it the second-largest theme park in the world, following Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It first opened in 1974.

The site even had your pockets in mind when determining where is the best place to go for a great night out. Below are some factors that Bonus Finder considered in their ranking:

  • Average Price of a Drink
  • Average Price of a Hotel Room
  • Average Taxi Cost from the Airport to the City Center

Lastly, (and maybe most importantly, depending on who you ask), the site also considered which clubs and events had the latest “last call at the bar.”

The site reviewed “the number of bars, hotels, nightclubs, casinos, stripclubs, and late night food venues were calculated per 10,000 people. Each city has a normalized score out of 10 on each of the factors, before taking an average total normalized score across each of these scores to reach our final overall score out of 10.”
