Get Over to The Boiling Point in Point Pleasant for fresh local seafood!

On Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and every Friday during Lent, people abstain from eating meat. During these days, it is not acceptable to eat lamb, chicken, beef, pork, ham, deer, and most other meats. However, eggs, milk, fish, grains, and fruits and vegetables are all allowed.

Being Jewish, I never had to observe Lent.

Growing up on Long Island, my neighborhood was filled with Catholic families. My best friend since childhood grew up in a Catholic family, which is how I learned about Lent and all the Catholic traditions and holidays. I learned a lot by occasionally attending church with my Catholic friends.

When I was 7 or 8, I accidentally received communion.

I went to church with my friends and when they approached the altar I followed and did everything they did. The minute I knelt in front of the priest, he held this shiny plate under my chin and said, Body of Christ.” I froze like a deer in the headlights. I didn’t know what to do. The priest gently grabbed my chin to open my mouth and placed a wafer on my tongue. I didn’t know if I should swallow it or spit it out. My friends told me that it would dissolve In a few minutes.

I thought I was going to get in trouble with my mother and God because Jews don’t engage in the same practices as Catholics. It turned out ok. I’m still here and my mother laughed hysterically at me and said, “You’ll be fine.”

You live and learn.

There are many places, especially here on the Jersey Shore to grab a meal that aligns with observing Lent.

I mean, it’s the Jersey Shore! There are plenty of seafood markets, restaurants, and lots of places that serve vegan and vegetarian dishes.

I’m going to suggest some of my favorite places and include places favored by the members of some of the food pages on social media and message boards.

  • U House - : 456 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ 08721

This came highly recommended by a few listeners and my dear friend, Chef Umberto Turelli. Sushi, sashimi, many seafood offerings , and vegetarian options available. They’ll be happy to prepare a vegetable sushi platter for anyone who asks.
The sushi and sashimi platters are beautifully presented and fresh.

Chef recommends the seafood boil. Eat in or take out, this place is highly recommended.

  • The Boiling Point - 500 Washington Ave Unit 6, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742

Pick up a bag, take it home, cook it up, and share this hearty meal with your family.

I met the folks who run this place. They advertised on the WRAT and shared food with our staff.

Seafood boils are  huge thing here on the shore. Boils are fresh local seafood, vegetables, sausage, and custom seasonings in single-use pots with simple directions for you to bring home, boil, and have a feast!

You can ask them not omit the sausage for Lent. Or You can customize the boil items that suit your taste.

  • Cousins Maine Lobster - 800 Ocean Ave N Space #109-110, Asbury Park, NJ 07712

4 words…Tater Tots With Lobster! If I were observing lent, I would eat that every Friday. Adding a bowl of the seafood chowders and bisques will complete the meal. I have had the lobster bisque and it is creamy and decadent.  What could be bad about a fresh lobster roll with warm butter or a Maine lobster roll?

  • The Waterfront - 361 E Lacey Rd, Forked River, NJ 08731

Open year round, enjoy the main dining room featuring an upscale menu. The second floor has options of indoor and outdoor dining with two bars. The view of the water is lovely, even this time of year. Live entertainment and fresh seafood. Check out the Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner menus.

  • Shogun Legacy - 1536 N Bay Ave, Toms River, NJ 08753

One of my favorite Ocean County eateries!  Located at the site of the Bey Lea golf course in Toms River, Shogun Legacy offers fabulous sushi, soups, salads, and several entree choices that won’t interfere with Lent.

Make sure to say hello to Kevin, the manager who is determined to make sure your experience is a positive one.

If the house special Chilean seabass is available, order it!

  • Keyport Fishery - 150 W Front St, Keyport, NJ 07735

Eat in or takeout at this casual dining establishment. It’s cash only and everything is prepared to order. Sandwiches, chowders, bisques, side dishes and desserts. Catering is available as well. It’s one of our Monmouth County go to places.

    The Keyport Fishery

The Keyport Fishery is a historic seafood eatery located in downtown Keyport, NJ. Located across from the Raritan Bay
