Giants Announce Draft Party, It Immediately Sells Out
The NFL draft is now less than three weeks away. With much anticipation, the New York Giants draft party was announced yesterday at about 2:30 pm via the team’s Facebook page. Three hours later, there was an updated post; the event had already sold out.
The draft party was set for 6 pm at MetLife Stadium. Guests could watch the first-round selections, hit the open concession stands, and be treated to discounted merchandise for sale. In addition, the Giants explained, “Giants Draft Party will feature activities for all ages throughout the first round of the draft, including autograph sessions with current Giants players and Giants legends.”
This all sounds like great fun. For season ticket holders, tickets are still available. However, even though the event is at a massive venue like MetLife, there is something to be said for the rush of interest.
What The Giants Draft Party Selling Out So Quickly Really Means
Fans recognized something here. Sure, the draft is thrilling, and the NFL has done a tremendous job of making a spectacle of the weekend, especially for the first round.
However, for Big Blue, this is one of the most important drafts in the history of the New York Giants franchise. That’s a heavy and dramatic statement, but it’s true. Here’s why.
As we know, the Giants have the sixth pick. That’s both a great spot and a tricky spot at the same time. We know the top three teams selecting have all but locked in on the top quarterbacks in Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye.
The Arizona Cardinals hold the 4th pick and the Los Angeles Chargers hold the 5th pick and that’s where things get really interesting. This is where J.J. McCarthy hovers above. Do the Giants want him (or Drake Maye)? If so, the Giants might have to move up to get him or they are left with living with drafting him 6th, which some were considering to be too early.
In 2019, the Giants also had the 6th pick. They selected quarterback Daniel Jones.
Is Jones still the guy? Is he healed? Will he remain healthy for once? These are short questions with long and complex answers. The bigger question is, might the Giants keep Jones and draft a new QB? With this particular draft, it makes a lot of sense.
Yet, there are so many other massive needs the Giants have. This is also a deep draft at the receiver position. This is another massive need for this offense. They have been without a #1 wideout since the glory days of Odell Beckham Jr.
Guys like Washington Huskies star Rome Odunze or LSU playmaker Malik Nabers should be available at #6 as well.
Though we’ve touched on many points, question marks, and glaring needs, the point here is that this draft could have a franchise-changing ripple effect. Fans are frustrated and tired of the messy seasons. Still, they have faith that GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll could turn it around.
Selling out the Giants draft party so quickly, proves they recognize this draft’s pivotal importance, and they want to see what happens.
