Happy 4/20 to all who celebrate! If you want some tasty tunes to feed your head on this fine holiday, here are ten of my favorites for your listening pleasure. No Willie Nelson on my list, but I think you’ll enjoy regardless. So put on those headphones and smoke ’em if you got ’em!

  • Pink Floyd - Us & Them

What is the greatest stoner album of all time and why is it Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd?

  • The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

Johnny Marr’s incredible guitar work is hypnotic, and the Smiths’ rhythm section keeps things pulsing on “How Soon Is Now?”

  • Massive Attack - Protection

English trip-hop legends Massive Attack’s second album Protection is a great soundscape for the holiday, and the vocals from Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl make it next-level chill.

  • Steely Dan - Aja

Steely Dan songs are often enigmatic, and the title track to Aja is a beautiful sprawling tune that will float right around you as you take it in.

  • Traffic - The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys

There’s something about the ’60s and ’70s (weed?) that brought forth some incredible songs that leisurely strolled past the 8 or 9 minute mark, but not one second feels wasted (though the listener may be!).

  • David Bowie - Space Oddity

If you’re as high above the Earth as Major Tom, this Bowie tune is for you.

  • Bob Marley - Sun Is Shining

I mean, Bob Marley. Enough said! This remix of “Sun Is Shining” always puts me in a happy state of mind.

  • The Verve - Slide Away

Before Bittersweet Symphony was a massive hit for The Verve, their debut album was a glorious shoegaze-y soundscape, and this song is perfect for an evening chill session.

  • Led Zeppelin - What Is And What Should Never Be

Put the headphones on and let Jimmy Page’s guitar swirl around your head from ear to ear.

  • The Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station

Of course any list about music on 4/20 would be incomplete without the Grateful Dead, but how to choose just one song? Help On the Way/Slipknot, Franklin’s Tower, Scarlet Begonias, Estimated Prophet – there are so many great songs! I decided to go with “Terrapin Station” because it’s excellent, it’s long, and turtles!
