Eagles’ ‘Greatest Hits’ Now The Best-Selling Album of All Time
The King of Pop has been dethroned.
Per the Associated Press, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has now certified The Eagles’ 1976 release Their Greatest Hits 1971- 1976 38x platinum beating out Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which currently sits at 33x platinum.
The adjusted figure comes via the RIAA, who looked into the updated Eagles’ sales and stream numbers for the first time since 2006. At that time, Their Greatest Hits 1971- 1976 was only listed at measly 29x platinum. (Please note the sarcasm.) The last time figures on Jackson’ Thriller were updated was in 2017, so the numbers are relatively up to date.
Streaming figures various digital platforms were added to RIAA’s tallies back in 2013, with 1,500 album streams or 10 song downloads equaling one album sale. While there’s no breakdown, it would be very interesting to see how much of the adjusted figure for Their Greatest Hits 1971- 1976 equates in physical album sales versus streams/downloads.
In other words, get on this, RIAA! Stat geeks like me want to know details like this!
