Remember the tradition of asking your classmates and friends to sign your yearbook? No one really knew what to write. So, we relied upon things that happened that year and stood out at the time. Reading through them years later made it seem like a time capsule of that particular year.

VOTE: 80 Essential Hits From The ’80s

This is my list of the “we’ll always have” events and debuts for each Senior Class through the 80’s:

  • Class of 1980

    Olympic Hockey Gold – Post It Notes and John Lennon.

  • Class of 1981

    Diana & Charles-The Space Shuttle and Ronald Reagan.

  • Class of 1982

    Thriller-David Letterman and E.T.

  • Class of 1983

    Mario Bros.- Swatch Watches and Microsoft Word.

  • Class of 1984

    Band Aid – The Macintosh Computer and the MTV VMA’s

  • Class of 1985

    New Coke- Nintendo and Live Aid.

  • Class of 1986

    Oprah Winfrey-Hands Across America and the Phantom of the Opera.

  • Class of 1987

    The Simpsons-Prozac and Fox Broadcasting.

  • Class of 1988

    Rain Man- Laser Eye Surgery and the Computer Virus.

  • Class of 1989

    Tiananmen Square- Game Boy and the Berlin Wall.
