New Jersey is loaded with places that make some darn good cheesesteak sandwiches. Did you notice I didn’t use the word “BEST” in the title of this article? I asked hundreds of folks where they go in the state of New Jersey to get their favorite cheesesteaks. It really is hard to say who has the best cheesesteaks because it’s subjective.

Some of us like onions, peppers, and plastic liquid cheese. Some of us like just the meat and a few slices of melted Cooper Sharp. Some of us like provolone, and so on and so on. Some of my favorites are on the list, and there’s ONE place in South Jersey that people go wild over.

At some point, I’ll be heading down there to see what the fuss is all about because THIS place got a ton of mentions.

Take a look at the list of places that made the cut.

  • Midway Steak House - : 500 Boardwalk, Seaside Heights, NJ 08751

Boardwalk food holds a special place in a lot of Jersey hearts. My colleague, Jimmy Steal chose Midway and so did several other folks who’ve been going here for decades.

  • Chief's Steak Shop - : 109 Harris Ave, Middlesex, NJ 08846

Andy B. from “What’s On Your Plate” calls Chief’s his favorite cheesesteak joint. Others who chose them say the portions are huge and you can have whatever toppings you like.

  • Harry's Smokin' BBQ - 240 Dover Rd, Toms River, NJ 08757

Everything Harry does is big including the flavor. In addition to the variety of cheesesteak sandwiches, you MUST try the cheesesteak egg rolls, and any creative egg roll offerings that come from the creative mind of Harry Clayton.

  • Tomatoes Pizzeria - 701 Lacey Rd, Lacey Township, NJ 08731

This place has a cheering squad! Ed and several others from the food pages across the social media universe claim that this place not only makes a great cheesesteak sandwich, they make a pretty good cheesesteak stromboli. Ed likes his cheesesteak with extra cheese and raw onion.

  • CheeseSteak Louie's - 22 Boulevard, Seaside Heights, NJ 08751

If we’re talking strictly Ocean County, Cheesesteak Louie’s would make the top 3 favorite places to grab a juicy cheesesteak. Tom from Jersey Food Warrior’s has Louie’s in his top 2, and so do a boatload of other folks.

  • Pat's Pizza -(Home Of The Famous Cheesesteak) - 3103 NJ-88, Point Pleasant, NJ 08742

It’s been a long time since I’ve hit up Pat’s. It reminds me of my dearly departed friend Kim Demeter who was the first person to tell me about this place when I moved here in the 90’s. According to many others including Terri Apuzzo from Jersey Warriors, this place still makes a great cheesesteak.

  • Tap And Growler Bar & Grill - 363 Main St, Sayreville, NJ 08872

Danny Buckett from the Wednesday Warriors and several others dig the daylights out of the cheesesteaks here. The picture says it all.

  • Vittorio's Pizzeria - 59 Nathaniel Pl, Englewood, NJ 07631

Wani R. sent me a photo of her cheesesteak and it’s loaded with sauteed onions, OMG.

  • Meatheadz Cheesesteaks - 2495 Brunswick Pike #39, Lawrence Township, NJ 08648

My long time friend Ray Hurley was one of many who love what Meatheadz has to offer. How could you not? They load it up like it’s your last meal.

  • Donkey's Place - 1223 Haddon Ave, Camden, NJ 08103

Hands down the SECOND most mentioned place in South Jersey to grab a delicious cheesesteak. Lou travels from Wayne, Winnie travels from Toms River, and Artie travels from Middletown for Donkey’s cheesesteaks.

  • Big Blue Wrap & Roll Food Truck - You'll find them in Laurel Square in Brick a lot of the time from 11am to 6pm

Another great food truck makes it on to the list. Lorraine Delizia and her husband Michael own a great business called “Butter Me Up”, they make a gourmet compound butter and fabulous scones, and this is Lorraine’s favorite cheesesteak. big blue

  • Beef Boys Sandwich Company - 3201 Bridge Ave, Point Pleasant, NJ 08742

Everything is made in house. No frozen crap here. When you order, “Just Say The Beef Boys Way.”

  • Dolsot House | Korean BBQ Restaurant - 404 Marlton Pike East, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034

Not the first place I would think of to grab a cheesesteak, but there were plenty of folks who gave them a thumbs up.

  • Twisted Steaks - 55 Main St, New Egypt, NJ 08533

Not just a food truck anymore. Now you can sit down in a restaurant instead of your car to gobble up your delicious cheesesteak served on an artisan-style hot, crunchy pretzel. Thanks to Moe, Lynn, Tabitha, and Jim for giving these guys a shot.

  • Philly Philly Steaks - 1611 NJ-37 East, Toms River, NJ 08753

After you’re done eating that marvelous cheesesteak with a side of jalapeno poppers, head next door to Rich’s Ice Cream for a sweet treat.

  • Brynn Bradley - 839 N Broad St, Woodbury, NJ 08096

Not only a Gloucester County favorite, but it’s also a statewide favorite. Most of the folks who chose this place said, “It’s like no other cheesesteak you’ve ever had.” This is a top 3 South Jersey favorite.

  • Vinnie's Pizza and Subs - 1817 NJ-35, Wall Township, NJ 07719

I know we’re supposed to be talking about cheesesteaks, but this is the first place I ever had a sub from in New Jersey. It was a sausage parm sub and to this day, it was the best I’ve ever had.  Now on to the cheesesteak…The bread is perfect, they stuff the heck out of it with freshly made cheesesteak and all the toppings your heart desires.

  • Boaggio's Bread - 823 E Gate Dr, Mt Laurel Township, NJ 08054

John Cohl from the South Jersey Food Scene page says, “My personal favorite cheesesteaks are from Boaggio’s Bread in Mount Laurel.” I headed over to the website and realized that John eats there a lot. There’s a sandwich named for him that is not a cheesesteak, and it looks divine. It’s made on this incredible-looking bread with sesame seeds and on the bread is: Chicken cutlet with mortadella, roasted peppers, and fresh mozzarella, drenched in vodka sauce. Thanks for the heads up, John!

  • Antney's Grub - 2001 Surf Ave, Wildwood, NJ 08260 (Located in the Aruba Hotel)

Not only do they do a beautiful job with a hearty cheesesteak sandwich, the roast pork, with broccoli rabe, and provolone is one of those things you’d list if you had to choose what your last meal on Earth would be. I’m not speaking from personal experience, I’m relaying info from a group of people who call Antney’s home when they head to Wildwood.

  • Lillo's Tomato Pies - 2503 Marne Hwy, Hainesport, NJ 08036

Lillo’s was the NUMBER ONE choice across the state to get a phenomenal cheesesteak. Every single person that chose Lillo’s swears there isn’t a better cheesesteak in the Garden State. Who wants to come with me to Lillo’s in a couple of weeks?
