Umpire Recovering After Being Struck In Face During New York Mets Game
MLB Umpire Junior Valentine is recovering after he found himself on the wrong end of a wild throw Monday.
The incident occurred during the St. Louis Cardinals’ game against the New York Mets. The Cardinals’ shortstop Edmundo Sosa threw a wild ball to first base — but instead of reaching its destination, the ball nailed Valentine on his right cheek, knocking him to the ground.
The game was stopped while doctors checked out the ailing ump and resumed after about 10 minutes. Valentine, who was sporting a huge mark on the side of his face, opted to stay in the game.
Despite Sosa’s error, the Cardinals ended up beating the Mets 7-0.
An errant throw from Edmundo Sosa hit first base umpire Junior Valentine in the side of the head.
