‘Avengers: Endgame’: Here’s What We Know (No Spoilers)
Yeah, we agree with #DontSpoilTheEndgame. We haven’t seen it yet, either. But Marvel has dropped more than a few clues via trailers and posters. So, here are some things that we know going into Avengers: Endgame, which officially opens today (April 25).
Spider-Man and Nick Fury survived “The Snap” from Avengers: Infinity War. How do we know that? Because Marvel’s next film, Spider-Man: Homecoming shows Spider-Man and Fury working together. Could the film take place prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War? Sure, but the studio probably would have taken pains to mention that if it was the case.
Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Nebula make it back to earth: One of the big cliffhangers of Infinity War was: will Stark and Nebula be trapped in space, millions of miles from earth? After “The Snap,” Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Peter Quill, Drax and Mantis all vanished from existence. But Stark and Nebula remained on the planet Titan, with no working spacecraft. If the scenes in the Endgame trailers are to be believed, they clearly made it back to earth and reunited with the other Avengers (and Rocket Raccoon). However, there is a rumor that Marvel put scenes that aren’t in the film into the trailers to throw fans off.
Scott Lang (Ant-Man) is no longer trapped in the Quantum Realm: Ant-Man and the Wasp featured the most mind-blowing post-credits scene in Marvel’s history. Scott returns to the Quantum Realm, while Hope (aka the Wasp), Hank and Janet wait for him in earth’s realm. Scott begins to panic when he loses communication with them, and we then learn that they’ve all become victims of “The Snap.” But in the Endgame trailer, we see Lang with the Avengers and in an earlier te,aser we see him outside of the Avengers’ HQ.
Black Panther‘s Shuri is gone, but Thor: Ragnarok‘s Valkyrie isn’t: We never actually saw Shuri disintegrate with “The Snap” at the end of Infinity War, although she is listed among the missing in a brief scene in the trailer. But Marvel dropped hints in a series of character posters released in March: characters who are still “alive” are in color (including all the Avengers who survived “The Snap”), while all of the characters who are gone are in black and white. Shuri’s poster is in black and white. Valkyrie, who we hadn’t seen since Thor: Ragnarok, is in color. That’s interesting because we didn’t know if she survived Thanos’ attack on the Asgardians’ ship in the opening scene of Infinity War. Is Korg still alive as well? These posters also reveal that Dr. Strange’s partner Wong is still alive, as is Tony Stark’s pal, Happy Hogan (who is also seen in the Spider-Man trailer) and his fiance, Pepper Potts.
Bucky, Sam Wilson, Wanda and the Vision all survive: Vision was destroyed by Thanos in battle at the end of Infinity War, giving Thanos the final Infinity Stone that he needed to destroy half of all sentient life via “The Snap.” Bucky, Sam and Wanda all disintegrated as a result of “The Snap.” But Marvel has announced that Bucky and Sam have their own TV series coming to the Disney+ streaming service, as will Wanda and the Vision. We know that Bucky and Sam haven’t spent enough time together for this to be a pre-Infinity War series, so it certainly has to come afterwards. Vision and Wanda’s series could take place during their secret dates (as seen in Infinity War), but that seems unlikely. There’s also a Loki series coming to Disney+, and while he was killed by Thanos in the first act of Infinity War, his story could certainly take place at any point during the last few centuries.
Will there be some crushing losses by the end of Endgame‘s three-plus hours? For sure. But, based on the evidence we’ve seen, we’re pretty sure that, at the least, everyone who died in “The Snap” isn’t really gone. But then again, can superheroes ever really die?
