  • This event has passed.

May 132021 - May 172021

“Godspell the Revival” will explode onto the Toms River East High School stage May 13-16. The Eastside Theater Company is thrilled to create an exciting new production of this incredible and heartwarming musical. This show is directed by Melissa Moore Reimertz, choreographed by Jessica O’brien, and has music direction by Robert Sammond and Chris Burbank. It was conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (of Pippin and Wicked fame.)

This musical by Stephen Schwartz is based upon the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak the first production opened off Broadway in 1971 and was revived several times including the well known Godspell the Revival 2012. In this retelling of the original sensation, contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements make Godspell fresh and exciting. Godspell was the first major musical offering from 3-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children Of Eden); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day By Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs including “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All For The Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man”, “By My Side”, and “Beautiful City.”

Toms River East’s current production of Godspell the Revival will be slightly different. Our vision will feature the lessons of the St. Matthew’s Gospel through the eyes of children learning about how to be good human beings and treat all others with respect regardless of differences. Acceptance for all is a prominent message of this interpretation. In addition, this version will include contemporary references and updates. In fact, Anthony Soprano might even make an appearance at one point. Our show is performed through the style of improvisation, so the show will be different every night! The positive message and overall style of the play, however, remains the same, professional, feel good, family entertainment that The Eastside Theater Company is known for. The show will be performed live each night and available for live streaming in the comfort of your home.
