Celebrate the Light! The Lighting of Tucker’s Island Lighthouse
January 1, 2014 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
Tuckerton SeaportLight up the new year at Tuckerton Seaport! Kick off the celebration of New Jersey’s 350th with a great event celebrating the Tucker’s Island Lighthouse on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1st from 1 to 7:30pm.
Tucker’s Island Lighthouse, originally located on Tucker’s Island on the southern end of Long Beach Island, fell into the sea during a storm in 1927. Tuckerton Seaport’s replica of the lighthouse is one of 17 buildings at the Seaport. The replica lighthouse houses exhibits on Lighthouses and Lifesaving, and the Tuckerton Railroad. Visitors are welcome to climb the tower to the top of the lighthouse.
Starting at 1pm, visitors can take part in lighthouse-themed make and take crafts for children, and will enjoy talks and programs highlighting the historical aspect of the lighthouse. Join us for a bonfire at 5pm. At 7pm, we’ll be lighting the light on top of the Tucker’s Island Lighthouse.
Programs include:
Keepers of the Light: Learn about the Ryder family and meet members of the family that kept the lighthouse going
Music in the Lighthouse: Arthur Rider was a musician- visit his instruments and hear the songs he would have played while living in the lighthouse
Fresnel Lenses: How does a lens work? What are some uses of Fresnel lenses in our everyday life?
