This week, we have Kristina Faretra, a Middletown mom of two. Kristina and her husband have a son Tyler, turning three in January, who has been struggling with an illness called Gastroparesis since he was four weeks old. Gastroparesis affects millions worldwide, yet to date there is little research being done to find a cure. It basically means “paralysis of the stomach.” Gastroparesis is often overlooked, but can be easily diagnosed given the proper testing. Gastroparesis affects the gastrointestinal system, it is a digestive motility disorder in which the stomach muscles, controlled by the Vagus nerve, fail to contract and move food from the stomach into the intestines at the proper rate. This can cause a myriad of problems such as weight loss, inability to digest food, nausea, acid reflux and blood sugar issues.
