On Feb. 28, thousands will charge into the icy Atlantic Ocean at Seaside Heights. Why? The Polar Bear Plunge raises money for Special Olympics New Jersey. It happens at 315 Boardwalk.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 11:30 a.m. The plunge kicks off at 1 p.m.

This fundraiser powers training sessions and competitions for athletes statewide. Special Olympics New Jersey counts on this plunge as a major source of income each year.

You can jump in solo. Or you can join a team. Everyone who signs up should try raising funds and spreading the word about what Special Olympics does.

Crowds pack the shoreline every year. Spectators come from all over to watch brave souls dash into frigid water.

Want to join? Head to plungeseaside.org. You'll find everything you need — registration forms, fundraising tips, the works.

This marks the tradition's comeback to the shore town. Previous plunges brought massive crowds to the boardwalk when winter still had its grip on the coast.

The athletes this money helps compete in many sports. Training happens across New Jersey, month after month.

February means one thing: bone-chilling ocean temps. Late winter water stays far too cold for anyone thinking about a pleasant swim.

Teams can register together, combining their fundraising power. Going solo? Set your own goal through the online platform.
