Every weekday, I’m going to drop a song that I like to call the 4:20 HIT of the Day. What does this mean? Simply, it’s a song that I think will give you some good vibes, ‘spark up’ nostalgia or just remind you about a tune that you might love but just haven’t heard in a while.
Today’s HIT is the song that introduced us to the iconic Prince, “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” It was released in August 1979 as the lead single from his second album ‘Prince.’ The song was Prince’s first major hit single in the U.S., reaching #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1980.
The song professes the love for a woman, how he would treat her better than the men she is with, and his frustration that she thinks of him as “a child”. It was later revealed that the song was about a crush Prince had at the time on pianist and singer Patrice Rushen (“Forget Me Nots.”)
