It’s coming home! The England Women’s team are champions of Europe after defeating Germany 2-1 in extra time at the Euro 2022 tournament in front of a record crowd at Wembley Stadium in London yesterday. Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal in the 110th minute to give the Lionesses their first European championship, and she gave the world her own Brandi Chastain moment as she ripped off her top in celebration, whipping Wembley into a frenzy.
There were so many amazing things to take away from the match, the tournament, and England’s performance. First, they were up against Germany who have won every European Cup final they have been in, a total of eight of the last twelve trophies. This was England’s first Euro final, and they did it front of 87.192 people, the single largest crowd ever for a European final for either men or women. In fact, the three largest attended matches in Europe this season were all women’s games,
The Lionesses win should serve as a watershed moment for women’s soccer, much like the US winning the World Cup on home soil back in 1999.
