Every weekday at around 4:20pm, I’m going to drop a song that I think you should listen to and make the remainder of your workday a bit more mellow with the 4:20 HIT of the Day. What does this mean? Simply, it’s a song that I think will give you some good vibes, ‘spark up’ nostalgia or just remind you about a tune that you might love but just haven’t heard in a while.
Today’s HIT is a great tune that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late spring of 1972 by Looking Glass with “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl).”
The lyrics tell of Brandy, a barmaid in a busy seaport harbor town. Though lonely sailors flirt with her, she pines for one who has long since left her because he claimed his life, his love, and his lady, was “the sea.” Following the song’s release, “Brandy” increased in popularity as a girl’s name in the United States. According to data from the Social Security Administration, Brandy was the 353rd most popular name in 1971, 140th in 1972, and, in 1973 (the first full year after the song’s popularity), 82nd.
With the smooth sounds by the band and great vocals performed by Elliot Lurie with great harmonies, “Brandy” is a terrific song to listen to on vinyl with headphones.
