Toms River Extends Curfew In Barrier Island Beach Communities Through September
Mayor Maurice B. “Mo” Hill’s administration has reinstituted a curfew for people 17 years old and younger in the barrier island beach communities in the Township of Toms River.
The curfew which is now in effect through September 30 is in response to complaints of unruly behavior by juveniles during the Memorial Day weekend from residents within the beach communities.
The Township of Toms River prohibits minors aged 17 or under to be outdoors unaccompanied by a parent or guardian in North Beach or Ortley Beach from 11 pm through 5 am.
“The curfews worked well in 2020 and 2021,” said Mayor Hill in a press release. “We had few if any disturbances during those seasons and we do not want a repeat of what happened during the Memorial Day weekend this year. With the threat of “pop-up” parties being promoted on social media, we need to give our Police Officers the authority to maintain the peace in our family friendly beach communities.”
“The goal and focus of this curfew is not to target children enjoying their time at the shore, but rather to address the destructive behavior we have experienced on both public and private property with large groups of juveniles. It is our responsibility to preserve the quality of life in our beach communities for everyone, “said Police Chief Mitch Little.
Those violating the curfew could be charged, however, there are a few exceptions such as medical emergencies, travel to and from gainful employment, travel to and from religious or education functions, and travel to and from a private gathering.
