Star Wars fans just got a nice May 4th surprise: Lucasfilm announced that Taika Waititi will direct an upcoming film for the franchise.

"Incoming news from a galaxy far, far away… Academy Award winner Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release with Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns," they said on the Star Wars Facebook page.

Waititi directed the season one finale of Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian; he also directed the third Thor film, Thor:Ragnarok. Earlier this year, he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit, which he directed and co-starred in.

The studio also confirmed that a new untitled Star Wars TV series is in the works at Disney+ from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland.  It’s not yet known if Waititi’s film is one of Disney’s three untitled Star Wars movies slated for Dec. 2022, 2024 and 2026.
